Okay, so I know I don't really use this thing so much anymore (or, um, at all) but regardless this is literally the sweetest thing I have ever seen in my life and you should all go watch it immediately.

In other news, boy woes, blah blah, URI is great but I need to make some friends in the South County area, doing a lot of writing, drinking heavily with my awesome roommates, you're all welcome to come over and drink cheap red wine with me at my awesome beach house.

If this is another Katrina, I'm taking the semester off and coming home to help.

Same goes for you too, Hannah. Fuck you.

If I wasn't so broke I'd buy you a pair of these. <3

Will possibly/probably (depending on how my UMass financial aid comes through) be taking the fall semester off to work in New Orleans. I'm going to do something worthwhile with this, though- an internship or Food Not Bombs/SaveNOLA both seem likely. I didn't do shit with this semester; I've got the RIC literary mag with my name on it, the writing group and did some volunteering for the Rhode Island Obama campaign... and we all saw how well that worked out. Heh.

Reading Tom Stoppard, Ionesco and huge amounts of Eric Kraft.

Hee hee hee. This is the first Onion article to actually make me laugh in ages.

Also, "Oceanside" is the best Decemberists song and I will brook no argument on the subject.

Historical (okay, pseudo-historical, at this point) crush of the week: Aldous Huxley. Those eyes, my goodness.

Goddamn, ladies (gentlemen?). And with a British accent.

He taught French for a year at Eton, where Eric Blair (later known by the pen name George Orwell) was among his pupils, but was remembered by another as an incompetent and hopeless teacher who couldn’t keep discipline.

He could decline my pronoun any day of the week!

30 Rock: someone recommended this to me as a substitute in my woefully Arrested Development-less life. It's not quite as magnificent, but pretty much the closest you're going to come to AD at the moment. <3

Nothing to report. My days feel really stymied as of late; get up, breakfast, shower, cue self-pity, jobhunt on Craigslist, go to my one class if applicable, jobhunt eye-arr-ell (filling out applications and such), read for a while at Cafe Zog, come home, cook dinner, hang out with the roommates, more self pity, fuck around on the Internet, sleep. I hate being unemployed or, rather, I hate being unemployed and not in school. I'm not doing much of anything these days, it would seem, and as a result I seem to have fallen into this weird purposeless malaise; it's only compounded by a bout of homesickness that rivals fall 06's wangstfest of epic proportions. Ugh.

At least I smell great right now. Go go fancy perfume I can't afford.

Currently reading: Beautiful Children by Charles Bock. I was really excited to get into this, as there's been a lot of buzz going around about it (BEST DEBUT NOVEL EVAR, etc), but it's just falling flat in pretty much every way. The one character who's even remotely rounded is just downright dislikable (which is not necessarily a bad thing in a character, but when he's the only protagonist in the story the reader is really paying attention to...) and Bock is annoyingly centered on long sociological tangents and diatribes that probably sound really deep to the antisocial tenth-graders who're undoubtedly reading the novel in the back of Civics class, but are awesomely lackluster in both language and content. The subject matter (comic book nerds and the weird, weird subculture surrounding them) is certainly one near and dear to my heart, but the book's buried under self-conscious writing and windy diatribes about Las Vegas. (We get it, dude. You like Vegas. That's why you set your novel there. Can we move on...?)

It's nearly half past twelve. Time to conclude the self-pity and fucking-around-on-the-Internet combo portion of today's Jay Show and move into the comatose period, I guess.

This Mardi Gras was... eventful.

It's worth noting that my tradition of doing hideously, hideously embarassing things to myself the night of Fat Tuesday has been upheld yet again.

Eurgh.

Someone tell me to stop lying in bed reading Perez Hilton and do my postmodern American lit paper.

I'm home if anyone wants to hang. Quarter later tonight, maybe. It is Dyke Night, after all, although I'm somewhat bereft of cash at the moment.

PS Really. I enjoy attempting to legitimize my disgustingly nerdy hobbies as much as anyone else, but get a grip. All-Star Superman is not a graphic novel. Marvel Zombies is not a graphic novel.

SO

Charlie and I are doing Turkey Day together at my house. If you're reading this, you're invited; I'm sure most of you are doing some kind of family stuff in the daytime, but we'll be at my house eating good food, drinking wine and watching movies all day. Please, come and hang out, even if it's only for an hour or two! We'd love to see you.

To entice you to coming by, a rough menu of sorts (with tasty pictures):

...plus pecan pie and copious amounts of wine/champagne. Veggie options too.

Hope to see you there!

GOING HOME TOMORROW (technically today). And not a moment too soon; I'm craving crawfish pie like a pregnant lady. Unf.

What more's there to say? Providence is sucking unusually hard lately. I'm feeling restless. Reading a LOT of Terry Pratchett (say what you will, but his books are nice and light and funny and they always have happy endings). Went to Austin last weekend. Just discovered Donald Barthelme (mmm, postmodern surreality- seriously, go check out The Dead Father, it's fantastic).

I lost my glasses, which is really inconvenient as I tend to have panic attacks while I'm falling asleep (guess it's something to do with the sensation of floating/drifting away that my body starts screaming "DON'T GO TO SLEEP YOU WON'T WAKE UP") and having to jerk awake and take out the contacts is really rather irritating.

I miss people. Lots of people, a few more than others. Everything is shifting and I'm not on solid ground. Ugh.

We favor unreasonably huge subsidies to the Brain Slug Planet. [Mon, Oct 22, 07 @ 5:00pm]
This Colbert for president shit is ridiculous. I love Stephen Colbert (a little less than when he was on Strangers With Candy, but still), but the only thing I can see is, if anything, college students going in to vote, thinking "Hurrr, I love Stephen Colbert!" and taking votes away from the Democrats.

Then again, I'm a registered Independent, so I can't find it within myself to get too up in arms about the whole thing. Hurrah for the Voter Apathy Party.

Life is kind of lame at the moment. I haven't gone to pilates in like two weeks and am feeling more bloated and disgusting than usual. I've definitely gained at least fifteen pounds since the start of the summer- I blame working at a restaurant which serves my favorite food in the entire universe + moving into an apartment with a Sicilian roommate. Operation Anorexia goes into effect today.

Went to New York this weekend and spent too much money as per norm. Some travel plans in the near future; NY in a few weeks for Decemberists and drunkenness, Austin the weekend after that (hurrah), New Haven sometime before Thanksgiving. Home for Turkey Day. It'll be lovely, if I ever manage to scrape up some dough.

My car caught on fire last week, and I'm reading Paul Auster.

At least it's a pretty day.

So my doctor thinks that I actually sprained my chest from coughing. I didn't even know you could do that.

On the bright side, he gave me 'tussin with codeine so my lungs can relax and let my muscles heal. Awww yeah. (And my roommate made me delicious French onion soup. Corinne Wahlberg is the best roommate ever.)

I'm homesick, and the crystal in my nose stud fell out. ARGH. Fucking allergies. Fucking bronchitis. Fucking everything. This weekend should improve my disposition, hopefully.

Ugh. I don't want to leave. The summer went by too damn fast. Back in Lil' Rhody on Monday, most likely.

Oh well. I'm going to go eat the fuck out of an almond cream snowball. And it will be good.

Love y'all, miss y'all, all that jazz.

Well, at least I know what I'm doing with my excess cash.

Two Decemberists shows + weekend in NY. November 1-4. I'm looking forward to it. Hurrah for spending too much cash on frivolous hyperliterate indie-rock excursions...

Nothing much else to say. I don't want to leave home. It feels like I just got here.

Who's coming out for Midsummer Mardi Gras tonight?
